Summer 2023

06/07/2023

Summer is in full swing up here on Flathead Lake and we couldn’t be more excited to get out there and start enjoying it! Going boating with friends and family is always a blast, but don’t forget these quick tips to keep your loved ones safe.

1. Always wear a life jacket: Wearing a life jacket is the most important safety tip. Make sure that you have a properly fitting life jacket for each person on board.

2. Check the weather: Always check the weather before you go boating. If the forecast calls for high winds or thunderstorms, it’s better to stay on land.

3. Have a float plan: Make sure that someone knows where you’re going and when you plan to return. This way, if you don’t return on time, someone will know to look for you.

4. Know the rules: Make sure that you know the rules of the waterway. This includes speed limits, no-wake zones, and navigation rules.

5. Don’t drink and boat: Just like drinking and driving, drinking and boating is illegal and dangerous. It’s important to stay sober while operating a boat.

6. Keep a watchful eye: Always keep a lookout for other boats, swimmers, and obstacles in the water.

7. Have the right equipment: Make sure that your boat has all of the necessary safety equipment, including life jackets, flares, fire extinguishers, and a first aid kit.

8. Know your limits: Don’t take risks that you’re not comfortable with. If you’re not an experienced boater, it’s better to stay in calm waters.

9. Keep your boat in good condition: Regularly maintain your boat to make sure that it’s in good working condition.

10. Take a boating safety course: Consider taking a boating safety course to learn more about safe boating practices
